In honor of Dr. Pryce, a long-time community leader, and Black business owner

When Dr. Pryce was 9 years old he worked in his family’s pharmacy, serving ice cream to young people. Over the years he would work every job in the pharmacy, learning the business inside and out before graduating from Lake Charles’ only black Catholic school, Sacred Heart.  Later, he would graduate from Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in pharmacy, and become the owner of Pryce’s Pharmacy.

In a state known as “Sportsman’s Paradise”, one might presume that its citizens are healthy and active people. However, Louisiana is among the states with the highest rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and obesity. Diabetes affects more than 10.5% of adults in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and eating the wrong foods plays a major part in the prevalence of this disease, especially within the Black community.

In honor of Dr. Pryce who transitioned in 2021, The AACCLC is committed to addressing the high rates of diabetes in our community through education and expanding access to healthy foods and activities.
